Il passe un an \u00e0 la poursuite des chouans normands. D\u00e9go\u00fbt\u00e9 des marches incessantes, il d\u00e9serte et entre dans le 10e hussards. Il parcourt alors la France, le nord de l\u2019Italie, une partie de l\u2019Espagne, sans combattre. Puis, c\u2019est le s\u00e9jour au camp de Boulogne. En septembre 1805, l\u2019arm\u00e9e part pour l\u2019Allemagne. Lors de sa premi\u00e8re bataille, \u00e0 Wertingen, Gheerbrant capture un canon autrichien, ce qui lui vaut la L\u00e9gion d\u2019honneur. Il est \u00e0 Ulm, entre \u00e0 Vienne. Il est attach\u00e9 \u00e0 Murat comme aide de camp, mais demande bient\u00f4t \u00e0 rejoindre son r\u00e9giment. Il se distingue dans la d\u00e9fense de la ville de Wischau. Il assiste \u00e0 la bataille d\u2019Austerlitz. La paix conclue, il est cantonn\u00e9 en Allemagne. En 1806, la guerre reprend. A I\u00e9na, Gheerbrant prend un drapeau prussien. Il participe \u00e0 de nombreux combats jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce qu\u2019en 1808, il obtienne sa r\u00e9forme. Il rentre alors au pays o\u00f9 il reprend le n\u00e9goce paternel.
