Deze situatie veranderde wanneer in het midden van de zeventiende eeuw hovelingen niet meer aan de hofhouding van de ene of de andere gouverneur werden toegewezen, maar aan het Koninklijk Hof te Brussel werden benoemd. Het Koninklijk Hof te Brussel was nu niet meer met een bepaalde persoon, maar met een territorium verbonden. Deze nieuwe hofhouding, de enige van die in het zeventiende-eeuwse Europa, vroeg om een theoretische verantwoording. Het is overigens ook zo dat gedurende de regering van Filips IV (1631-1665) in Madrid de hofetiquette werd vastgelegd. Deze gecodificeerde etiquette had gevolgen voor de andere hofhoudingen van de Spaanse monarchie in Europa, dus ook voor die in Brussel. De twee handschriften van Francisco Alonso Lozano die hier worden uitgegeven, moeten in deze context worden geplaatst. De auteur schreef ze tussen 1692 en 1712. Het eerste, getiteld Plan ou Estat de la maison royale dens ces estats de flandres, beschrijft nauwkeurig de functies aan de nieuwe Koninklijk Hof. Het tweede, getiteld Notices de toutes les emplois de la cour et de la chapelle royale de Bruxelles geeft het aantal hovelingen aan en vermeldt hoe zij worden vergoed. De beide teksten zijn een eersterangs bron voor de kennis van het Koninklijk Hof te Brussel in de zeventiende eeuw.
